Barbour Chelsea Quilted Coat – Garm Of The Week

It occurred to me last night at a friends firework party, can of lager in hand, wearing an old leather jacket, stood in front of a bonfire that i was still absolutly freezing. with the weather in England recently turning slightly on the cool side i needed to invest in a thick coat for the winter. So as soon as i got home i was straight on the internet scouting around for a nice coat. Now with the Quilted trend we posted a few months agos it made me look more into that style of coat, and i found this great coat on the John Anthony website.
With the classic polyester quilted design, corduroy collar detail, thick lining and side pockets to keep your hands from freezing in this climate that this was the one i needed. Now i’m just waiting for it to be delivered before the weekends antics, let’s hope it’s a bit chilly so i can show it off! this is also availiable in olive, and for a reasonable £110 i don’t think you’ll find anything better, this coat will last so many years i think it’s a great buy which makes it Garm of the Week, if not Garm of the Season! Heres the link - Barbour Coat

Barbour Jacket Winter Trend

Up until recently waxed jackets were only popular with farmers and people of the British countryside, over the last year they have somehow made their way into the towns and are becoming a popular trend in men’s fashion. Barbour is the major brand behind this waxed style jacket and in a previous post we talked about how the quilted barbour jacket also made the same transition from country side to town fashion. I was curious how this fashion trend originated and found it wasn’t actually part of Barbour rebranding themselves to target a younger and trendier market, it was, as with many things in fashion, mainly down to celebrity influence.

Celebrities such as Alex Turner and Lilly Allen sparked the trend by wearing Barbour jackets whilst performing at festivals, the trend grew in popularity in both men’s and women’s fashion quite rapidly. Once Barbour realised their clothing was becoming fashionable, they didn’t sit back and watch, they started to think of ways they could adapt their clothing ranges to fit in with modern fashion trends but still maintain that traditional british heritage style. Below are a couple British looks you can pull off with a Barbour jacket.

Barbour Jackets and hats available from www.my-wardrobe.co.uk

Boots available from ASOS The Online Fashion Store

If you don’t fancy forking out the money for a Barbour waxed jacket, ASOS offer a great alternative at a very reasonable price. The jacket shown below will only set you back £55 and still gives you that british heritage style. Available at ASOS The Online Fashion Store.

Chunky knits were a big hit in mens fashion last season and it looks as though they are going to be just as popular this autumn and winter. Recently looking around some of the online and high street shops iv’e noticed the chunky knits beginning to re-appear, with new twists and varied styles. Knit wear will always be a part of mens fashion, giving outfits layers and stepping in as alternatives to jackets, adaptable between both a formal and casual look.

Chunky Knits 09/10

The chunky knits I have seen around the shops so far seem to be incorporating a lot more patterns than we seen last year, the sort of ‘old man’ style patterns you see on your granddad’s knitwear and another popular pattern on this seasons men’s knitwear is the canadian style christmas knit pattern, this adds a kind of retro feel to the cardigans and jumpers and goes well with all the other retro trends currently bouncing around in men’s fashion. It’s seems as though the ‘old man’ style is expanding, as we have seen the rise of tasseled loafers, chord jeans and now it’s nearing winter you can top it off with a chunky knit, I wonder what other fashion tips and inspiration we can get out of our elders. If u want to try and avoid the ‘old man ‘ type of look you can always pull off a chunky knit with a nice pair of jeans, straight, slim or skinny with canvas trainers or some boots.

Below is a selection of chunky knits that have caught my attention whilst browsing.

The Tasseled Loafer has always been the stereotypical shoe for the successful businessman, mostly in america.
But over here in the UK, it is becoming a shoe for the ‘Lads about town’ or the casual office worker.
Commonly worn with a pair of tailored trousers or chinos or possibly even skinny jeans for a more casual look.

Abit of History about the shoe,

Prior to the ’80s, tasselled moccasin were rare. Bass made a few but they did not seem to be well received.

Some shoe stores sold tassels/tassels on leather disks to be inserted into the “penny” hole on weejun type straps.

The preferred tassel loafer, since the ’50s has been the Alden style skin-stitched apron shoe.
Alden was, and is, too expensive for most high school and collegiate “trad” type dressers.

The classic tassel loafer probably began to lose its popularity in the late ’60s, so did the Weejun. Societal change. Tassel loafers became the domain, in the South, of ole boys who were now attorneys in the county seat and similarly tradition-oriented, relatively affluent men. The adoption of the style of one’s youth also has some influence on such footwear choices.

Alden developed the classic tassel via the request of a Hollywood actor (or executive) based on a shoe he’d seen in Europe. That story used to be on the Alden web site (still is?). Ironic that the shoe is copied by the English for Italians.

The most common two versions of the shoe are the Sebago Kerry Tassel Loafer (left) and the Bass Weejun (right).

Keep watching for new styles of these shoes to be brought out this autumn by different designers.
