The Gillet
Looking around online shops and the high street, there are clearly more gilet’s available this season compared to previous years. Gilet’s did come to my attention last Autumn / Winter but I didn’t end up grabbing one, which was a good thing, as this season they have clearly grown in popularity within men’s fashion, resulting in a bigger variety too choose from.
I believe the reason Gilet’s have become more fashionable this year is probably due to the popular trends we have seen come forward this autumn and winter, trends and styles such as the worker trend, preppy trend and the british heritage trend currently featured on ASOS. The gilet works well with the rugged worker trend as it is a great item to wear over the top of a checked lumberjack style shirt, with a pair of roughed up jeans. The Ralph Lauren Gilet I have featured in this post will probably work better with the preppy trend, due to it’s simple style and just being the brand Ralph Lauren, which is often associate with the uni / preppy scene. In 2008 Autumn and winter may have brought out long coats and trenches before, but not this year. One of the most sought-after pieces for the upcoming season will be the shrunken denim jacket, in a variety of styles, not just the denim jacket but the Double Denim look is catching on. it’s very daring but if pulled off looks so cool. There has recently been alot of attention on more formal men’s fashion trends and the sophisticated look, I wanted to take a step back and look at the more rugged working class trend that All Saints seem to concentrate on. Looking through this seasons All Saints collection, they rarely break into any bright colours and add a rough and or dirty finish to some of the denim, footwear and shirts.
All Saints are still taking advantage of the popularity of the checked shirts, with a variety of styles and colour combinations in their new collection. All Saints shirts are generally thicker than other similar checked shirts on the market, adding to that ‘worker’ look and on a technical level making them more durable, they have also designed a padded quilted checked shirt which gives a real lumberjack look. When you have a checked shirt sorted the next step towards that rugged ‘worker’ look is pair of rough looking boots, All Saints is probably the best place to get a pair of these, as they have some good designs in their collection, different designs and different colours most of them with a rough/used finish.

Listed in the top 10 most stylish men of America, Justin Timberlake is no doubt an inspirational fashion icon, he has quite a definitive style and is well known for his hats, blazers and waist coats. If he’s not setting trends himself he will always be rockin’ new trends just before they crest. He likes to mix smart with casual, wearing shirts and skinny ties with a pair of pumps, or a waist coat with a t-shirt. Below are some pictures of what he’s been wearing in the last few months.
I also put together a look book at the bottom of the page so you can get the J.T look of 2009.

Chunky knits were a big hit in mens fashion last season and it looks as though they are going to be just as popular this autumn and winter. Recently looking around some of the online and high street shops iv’e noticed the chunky knits beginning to re-appear, with new twists and varied styles. Knit wear will always be a part of mens fashion, giving outfits layers and stepping in as alternatives to jackets, adaptable between both a formal and casual look.

Last Autumn and Winter the quilted Barbour jacket became a popular men’s fashion trend, moving from the British countryside to the city streets and it seems the quilted style will be back this year. Many designers have predicted the return of this trend and have added quilted style jackets, bombers and gilets to their collections, meaning their will be large variety to choose from with a large price range. I have noticed designers such as Ralph Lauren and Burberry add the quilted style jackets to their collections and at the lower end of the price range ASOS have added the quilted jacket to their line. The quilted jacket will work well with a pair of slim jeans and a pair of boat shoes or tasseled loafers.
